Learning the rules of Tajweed is essential for reciting the Holy Quran precisely as it was revealed. Tajweed literally means “beautification” or “doing something well,” and in the context of Quranic recitation, it refers to giving each Arabic letter its rightful articulation point (Makhraj) and intrinsic characteristics (Sifat).
1. What is Tajweed and Why is it Necessary?
When reciting the Quran, inaccurate pronunciation of letters or improper elongation can alter the meanings of sacred words. Learning Tajweed prevents major recitation mistakes (Lahn Jaliyy) and elevates the beauty of recitation (Lahn Khafiyy).

2. The Four Rules of Noon Sakinah and Tanween
Whenever a Noon Sakinah (a Noon with a Sukoon نْ) or Tanween (ً ٍ ٌ) appears, one of four rules applies depending on the letter immediately following:
- Izhar (Clear Pronunciation): When followed by the six throat letters (Hamzah, Haa, ’Ayn, Haa, Ghayn, Khaa), the Noon is pronounced clearly without nasal elongation (Ghunnah).
- Idgham (Assimilation / Merging): When followed by the letters of Yarmaloon (
ي ر م ل و ن), the Noon merges into the following letter. - Iqlab (Conversion): When followed by the letter Baa (
ب), the Noon changes into a light Meem with Ghunnah. - Ikhfa (Concealment): When followed by any of the remaining 15 letters, the sound of Noon is softly concealed with a light nasal sound held for two counts.
3. Rules of Meem Sakinah
A Meem with Sukoon (مْ) has three primary rules:
- Ikhfa Shafawi: When followed by Baa (
ب). - Idgham Shafawi: When followed by another Meem (
م). - Izhar Shafawi: When followed by any other letter.
4. Qalqalah (Echoing Sound)
Qalqalah refers to an echoing or bouncing sound produced when one of the five letters of Qutb Jad (ق ط ب ج د) carries a Sukoon. This ensures the letter is distinct and audible without producing an unintended vowel sound.
